I do not need to tell you about the current state of the national economy. If you read a newspaper or magazine, use the internet, or watch any news, you have been inundated with all the bad news. So it will not come as a surprise to you that the economy has also affected the investments at the Bucyrus Area Community Foundation.
The good news is that due to prudent management of our funds by our four investment advisors, the BACF has not suffered as much as most. With continued, sound management and, hopefully, an improving economy, we believe investments will slowly rebound and continue to grow.
The Board of Trustees in March and had a long discussion about grant-making and the spending policy for 2009. The BACF is responsible for being thoughtful and prudent in managing funds on behalf of both our donors and the charitable organizations we serve. The Board has taken a new approach to our spending policy for this year.
First, the Board decided to go to a "rolling" grant cycle for 2009. Grants will be reviewed at the May, September and, if necessary, our November meetings. Secondly, grants that address immediate needs (food, clothing, shelter, education and workforce development) will be given preference. Lastly, the BACF will try our best to fulfill requests that will help non-profits continue their operations in these difficult economic times.
It is our hope that by adopting these changes for this year, our grant making will have a more immediate impact on the health and vitality of our community.
