INFORMATION FOR ORGANIZATIONS CONSIDERING A GRANT REQUEST FROM THE BUCYRUS AREA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

PURPOSE OF BUCYRUS AREA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

To provide financial assistance for charitable, education and scientific purposes which will most significantly meet the charitable, educational, (including any and all schools who award State of Ohio diplomas and elementary or middle schools which "feed" said schools), cultural, and recreational needs of the Bucyrus Area Community (defined as Crawford County, except for the Galion area including Polk Township) regardless of race, color, creed, or sex. Galion is not included because a community foundation exists in that area.

ORGANIZATION QUALIFIED TO BE CONSIDERED FOR GRANTS

As a community foundation described in our Articles of Incorporation, the Bucyrus Area Community Foundation may only consider requests from organizations designated as tax-exempt under Section 501 © (3) of the Internal Revenue Code including governmental units. This means that most organizations must have applied to the I.R.S. and received a letter from them granting tax-exempt status. In addition, governmental units are considered tax-exempt, such as a county, city, or public school board. A number assigned by the I.R.S. for bank accounts does not necessarily mean an organization has tax-exempt status under Section 501 © (3).

GUIDELINES FOR GRANTS

  1. The Foundation normally limits its grants to organizations operating in the Bucyrus Area Community as defined. Income from the UNRESTRICTED funds is used to make grants of the following types:
    1. The Foundation does not plan to support "Start-up" programs for more than one or two years; and it must be demonstrated that the program will be financed or be self-supporting beyond the start-up year. Financial figures should be shown to support this.
    2. New projects to support defined Community needs. As of January 1, 1999, individual classroom grants requests will be redirected to the appropriate school endowment committee. School grants will be considered if the project is for building wide use, system wide use or will be used by a broad spectrum of the school population.
    3. Preschool grant guidelines:
      1. Preschools should have their own 501 © 3 determination letter.
      2. Preschools have to state that their teachings are non-denominational.
      3. Preschools need to have an open enrollment policy.
    4. Grants that will generate additionally needed funds for worthwhile community projects.
    5. Grants that provide needed programs for human services.
    6. Scholarships are awarded through the named scholarship funds within the Foundation. (Please refer to the "scholarship" tab on the web site).

    Miscellaneous details:

Requests for new equipment should include financial details including quotations for major items.

If the program has been in existence previously, explain how it was funded and why the new funds are needed.

  2. Among the purposes which The Foundation DOES NOT make grants are:
    1. Regular operating funds.
    2. Annual campaigns — local or national.
    3. Endowment programs (other then previously determined school endowments).
    4. Sectarian religious purposes, except for "designated" grants which have been accepted by the Foundation.
    5. Loans.
    6. Graduate fellowships and travel grants to individuals, except for "designated" grants/scholarships that have been accepted by the Foundation.
    7. Research grants.
    8. Those organizations that have not completed prior grant requirements.
  3. Details needed when applying for a Grant:
    1. Please complete the attached grant application and include attachments as required.

After the grant request has been received, a member of our Board of Trustees, or staff, will be assigned to review & investigate the grant. The Trustee assigned will meet with representative/s of the organization. The Trustee will then place the request before the entire Board for discussion and a final decision. Grants are usually made, if approved, in April & October. Please contact the office to answer any questions that may arise.

If you desire, we shall be glad to review a draft of your grant request before final submission. Please contact the Foundation office at (419) 562-3958, or by email at info@bacfoundation.org, for an appointment.
